Ronald Beckett, A Beckett Miscellany (PHX 0879-2)
A Beckett Miscellany is the latest CD of music by Canadian composer Ronald Beckett. Featuring a wide variety of instrumental selections ranging from chamber music to orchestral music to solo piano pieces, A Beckett Miscellany is a wonderful showcase of the breadth of talent displayed by this innovative composer. The Quintet for Winds displays a mastery of chamber writing and contrapuntal and homophonic texture, lying beautifully in each instruments richest range; harmonic and melodic ideas abound in the Trio for Winds, a unique instrumental combination that is as soothing as it is beautiful; the orchestral work Fantasia is quite a remarkable piece - it is based on a small fragment of music by J.S Bach (about ten bars worth) from which Ronald Beckett has woven and spun out an absolutely magnificent original work true in every way to the musical style of Bach; also featured on this collection are orchestral excerpts from three of Ronald Beckett's operas as well as short pieces for solo piano that feature the composer at the keyboard. As the Founder and Director of the performing group Arcady, the music of Ronald Beckett enjoys continual public and concert performance. A Beckett Miscellany serves as a wonderful introduction to one of Canada's most brilliant composers displayed in works of beauty and imagination.
